Watering - Yes, you can!

GPPA's display at the Southeast Flower Show was planned to demonstrate that successful gardening during drought and municipal outdoor watering bans can be accomplished by capturing rain water and distributing where most needed in the garden.

Member Jim Harrington and his wife Cece assisted show visitors.
They are owners of Rainwater Collection Solutions. Jim is a former GPPA President.

Proper Planting

Correct planting methods promote strong root development helping plants withstand periods of drought.

The best time to plant is Fall through Spring, on cloudy or overcast days.

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the container.
  • If soil is very dry, wet soil in the bottom of the hole.
  • Gently shake container soil off roots into hole, mix soils together.
  • Loosen roots.
  • For matted roots - slit the root mass several places, then loosen, and spread the roots out in  the hole.
  • Keep top of root ball slightly higher than surrounding soil.
  • Fill the hole with soil, pressing soil firmly around roots.
  • Water slowly and deeply, wait 15-30 minutes, water again.
  • Cover with 1-2 inches of mulch, keeping mulch away from stem.
