The Award-Winning GPPA
2008 Southeast Flower Show Display

Watering - Yes, you can!
GPPA's display at the
Southeast Flower Show was planned to demonstrate that successful gardening
during drought and municipal outdoor watering bans can be accomplished by
capturing rain water and distributing where most needed in the garden.

Plant Selection
|
Successful gardeners group plants with similar light, soil, and water needs
together. Careful site analysis is key to selecting appropriate plants for your
conditions.
- Does the area receive morning, afternoon, all, or no sun? All day
equals 6 hours or more; plants with part shade light requirements should have
morning sun only.
- Is the soil hard, red clay with rock, or has it been amended? Soil
preparation is the most important aspect of gardening!
- Is the area close to a water source, or a long distance away? Are
large trees in the vicinity? Large tree roots will win the competition for
water and nutrients. Is the area flat or sloped? Flat areas may quickly turn
into swamps during rainy times, and soil on slopes is often extremely dry.

Soil
Preparation
|
Soil preparation provides the biggest benefit to your garden. GOOD SOIL: nutrient-rich, moist, loose, full of organic
materials
Break up the soil, work in amendments that provide nutrients,
improve structure and drainage. Use a shovel, tiller, ax or pick to turn
and till the soil 8 to 12" deep. Remove rocks, roots and debris. Add
2 to 3 inches or more of composted organic material, as well as inert
ingredients and polymers, following package instructions. Turn until
well-mixed and uniform.
|
Types of Amendments and Their Benefits |
Organic Material
composted (aged) matter including: manure, homemade or commercial compost,
chopped leaves, leaf mold, composted tree bark, composted grass clippings, etc.
|
provides nutrients, improves soil structure and drainage, increases drought tolerance |
Inert Material
expanded shale, granite sand
|
helps clay soil remain aerated, does not decompose
|
Soil Polymers
crystals that expand and absorb water
|
as soil dries, water is slowly releases, keeping soil moist
