Beautiful Landscapes: The Key to Healthy Communities
For five years, Katy Moss Warner, dynamic presenter and President Emeritus of the American Horticultural Society, has been judging towns and cities for America in Bloom. She has witnessed first hand what happens when communities focus attention on their landscapes. The spirit of optimism and volunteerism reflect not only in the beauty of the community but also in its vitality. Communities with beautiful landscapes are the places where people want to live, work and play.

Katy Moss Warner is currently President Emeritus of the American Horticultural Society (AHS), a national, non-profit, member-based organization with a bold vision of “making America a nation of gardeners, a land of gardens.” Katy served on the AHS Board of Directors from 1992 – 1998, served as Chair of the Board from 1998 – 2000 and then provided day-to-day leadership as President and CEO from 2002-2006.

Prior to becoming AHS President, Katy was Director of Disney's Horticulture and Environmental Initiatives at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. With a team of nearly 700, she was responsible for the landscapes of four theme parks, 15 resort properties and over 70 miles of roads on the 30,000-acre property. For 25 years - from 1976 to 2000 - she provided the leadership necessary to ensure that Disney's horticultural traditions of beautiful gardens and environmental responsibility were sustained. She started the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival.

Katy received the Agriculture Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Arizona, where she received a degree in landscape architecture in 1974. She was awarded the Longwood Fellowship in 1994 and the Loeb Fellowship in the Harvard School of Design in 2000. She has received numerous awards including the Torsanlorenzo International Prize for the Environment. In 2000, she received an Honorary Life Membership in the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association.

Katy has traveled extensively hosting garden tours in Italy, England, Belgium, Czech Republic, Argentina, Morocco as well as many destinations within the USA.

Katy has been featured in numerous books, newspaper and magazine articles. She co-authored the book “The Gardens of Walt Disney World Resort”.

Katy Moss Warner has been actively involved with a number of professional and not-for-profit organizations. Currently, she serves on the Board of “America in Bloom’ and has been an AIB city judge since 2007. She judged international cities for Communities in Bloom in 2010.

Norman Kent Johnson

Other People’s Gardens
One of the hardest things about reworking an existing garden is the question, “Why?” Knowing how you will use your garden must play a role in defining the garden. Do you need to accommodate your dogs, children or more cars? Do you have horticultural challenges: too much shade, too much sun, or poor soil conditions? Or maybe the garden is simply tired and ready for a change. Whatever the case, the “why” must always precede the “what.” Renowned garden designer and author Norman Kent Johnson will guide you through thought processes for rethinking your garden to make it right for you.

Norman Kent Johnson holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, Louisiana State University, where he is listed as the first Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Design. He also attended the Radcliff College Seminars in Garden History, Harvard University.

He has served as: Garden Design Editor, Southern Living; Associate Editor, Landscape Architecture; and founding Editor, Garden Design magazines.

He has written/co-authored: Trees and Shrubs, Oxmoor House; Garden Design, Simon and Schuster; and Everyday Flowers, Longstreet Press.

His work as a garden designer in Mountain Brook, Alabama has been published, extensively; most recently in The Gardens of Norman Kent Johnson by Sherry Wilson and Mary Catherine Crowe. Three of his garden designs are also included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.

Public commissions include: A Garden for Southern Living, and The Abroms Rhododendron Species Garden, Birmingham Botanical Gardens; The Rector's Garden, Cathedral Church of the Advent; and the Sculpture Garden, Birmingham Museum of Art for the Red Mountain Garden Club.
