Where:  Dunwoody Nature Center North Woods Pavilion, 5343 Roberts Drive Dunwoody, GA 30338 or via Zoom for those who cannot attend in person

When:  Monday, November 14, 2022, 6:30 Social Time, 7 pm Annual Meeting; 7:30 Speaker

Perennial favorite GPPA speaker, Jenks Farmer, returns to visit us from Columbia, SC, a city he notes as notorious for being the hottest city in the South. The city slogan is ‘Famously Hot’.  Now, Columbia is coming to Atlanta.

Experts say this is the coolest summer we will ever see again. To help us prepare for hotter days ahead, Jenks will lead us on an exploration of the pallet of heat needing, flowering plants for the dog days of summer.  Jenks has honed expertise on these during his 30 plus years of gardening in Columbia and Augusta, Georgia.

Jenks also will talk about interplanting sequencing plants, ones that can overtake and smother each other through the summer to provide a constant display. He’ll talk about foliage and flowers that he’s proven work for perennial gardens over the long, hot summer.

BIO:  Featured in Garden & Gun, Southern Living, and the Dallas Morning News, Jenks Farmer has led teams to plant and establish the vision for the three major botanical gardens created in South Carolina over the past decades: Riverbanks Botanical Garden, Moore Farms Botanical Gardens, and the gardens of Historic Columbia in downtown Columbia, South Carolina.

Farmer’s writing has appeared in Fine Gardening, GreenPrints, Horticulture, and a host of other national gardening publications. He’s the author (as Augustus Jenkins Farmer) of three books and many essays he calls ‘garden-based-fiction.’  He’s presented at New York’s Wave Hill, the Denver Botanic Garden, Seattle’s Center for Urban Horticulture, the Smithsonian, and the EPCOT International Flower Show.

An engaging storyteller, Farmer encourages people of all walks of life to get outside and get their hands in the dirt.

Jenks will bring a few special plants to our meeting and copies of his books.
