Bulb Augers

Bulb augers help make easy work of planting when you go a little overboard buying bulbs. Let's face it, it takes lots of bulbs to make a stunning display. But digging those holes is ever so tedious. Stomp on bulb diggers work, but inevitably get clogged with Georgia clay making them less than ideal.

 

With an auger bit on your cordless or corded drill, and maybe your favorite kneeling pad, you can make hole after hole rapidly to create your dream bulb tableau.  

 

This is an occasion for which size matters. Unless you are a landscape professional with brawny muscles, please skip the 18-24" long augers or anything more than 3" wide. These large augers will overwhelm most folks with the torque. No one needs to end up in the E.R. from bulb planting!  

 

Make certain the width of the drill bit matches your drill. Depending on your soil, you may find that your cheap cordless drill is insufficient to get down deep enough. This can be the case with clay, densely rooted soil or rocky soil. In some cases, you may end up pulling out a corded drill with the extension cord if you have one. Or look at this as an opportunity to upgrade to a more powerful cordless drill. The holiday deals are upon us, after all!
