Jenks Farmer played a pivotal role in developing two of South Carolina's largest public gardens - Riverbanks Botanical Garden and Moore Farms Botanical Garden. He started on both as raw construction sites, managed their construction and design, and set long-term visions. Jenks has written extensively about both projects, which spanned 20 years and now host over a million guests a year.
Jenks has served on the American Horticultural Society's book awards committee and authored influential books like 'Garden Disruptors.' He is one of the few Deep South horticulturists interviewed by Britain's Garden Masterclass and the New York Times. In 2026, he is one of four new inductees into the South Carolina Academy of Authors, the first horticulturist in this esteemed group of South Carolina writers.
Jenks writes Plant People on Substack and for Weekly Hubris. Jenks and his family run a pioneering, organic nursery specializing in Southern bulbs on their 1750s farm in Beech Island, South Carolina.
