Spring Garden Party, Historic Candler Park, Saturday, May 16th

6/1/2026 1:39 pm

At An Teach Dubh (The Black House in Irish), Zia Taylor and Andrew Hetherington's Atlanta home, every corner holds a story. The fig tree at the entrance has stood its ground through years of change. Fern borders soften stone walls built to honor Irish roots. Hostas, hellebores, anemones, leopard plants, and oakleaf hydrangeas spill over the stone boarders, while a tidy herb garden still grows the garlic chives transplanted from Zia’s mother’s garden years ago. Raised beds fill up in the summer with tomatoes and blackberries.

Zia has been a gardener her whole life — from childhood days inspired by her mom's incredible herb gardens and borders to a growing indoor plant collection in her New York City apartments, to the planting of East Village tree pits with daffodils, and to the creation of a hidden shade garden tucked behind the East Village‘s JJ Cleaners & Laundromat, filled with hostas, astilbes, and trailing ivy. One small piece of that garden made the journey here: a ceramic elephant planter that still cradles its jade plant.

When Zia and Andrew moved to Atlanta in 2020, Andrew drove all their plants south. Some of those plants — including the anthurium and dragon plant in the living room — are now more than twenty-five years old. They have outlasted apartments, cities, and even a cross-country move. They are part of the family. The indoor plant collection has grown over the years with more than 50 varieties gathered into quiet vignettes throughout the house, nestled among the art, photography, and collected treasures of this highly creative, fashion designer/photographer couple.

Two special pop-up vendors will grace the spacious, wraparound porch of An Teach Dubh Saturday evening, so come prepared to shop! 3 Monkeys Nursery in Acworth is a flower farm and boutique, appointment-only nursery, specializing in dahlias and offering a wide variety of other rare plants. Everyday Farm and Garden, host of our recent pruning workshop in Perry, offers a wide selection of herbs and perennials (grown at their Lizella nursery), shrubs, annuals, houseplants, pottery, garden tools and gifts.
